Jahangirnagar University (JU) finished runners-up in the Inter-University Chess Competition 2026, displaying skill and tactical strength at the tournament organised by National University. The JU team secured the honour after four days of intense competition involving 27 leading universities across the country.
The tournament formally opened on October 14, 2026, at the Senate Hall on National University’s main campus in Gazipur. It aimed to give emerging and accomplished chess players from public and private universities an opportunity to develop and showcase their talent at the national level.
A total of 108 players from 27 universities took part in the competition, which ran for four consecutive days from October 14 to 17.
Dhaka University claimed the championship after four days of demanding, strategic contests. Jahangirnagar University challenged them with consistent performances and distinctive tactical play from the outset to secure the runners-up position. Khulna University finished third.
Throughout the tournament, JU’s players defeated a succession of strong opponents through composed play and far-sighted moves. Their time management and balance between attacking and defensive strategies, particularly in crucial matches, drew praise from spectators and adjudicators.
JU fought Dhaka University closely until the final moments of the decisive title contest. Although they narrowly missed out on the championship, their achievement brought joy and pride to the university community. Sports-loving students and teachers at the university welcomed the success.
A grand closing and prize-giving ceremony took place on the afternoon of October 17, 2026. National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A S M Amanullah attended as chief guest and presented trophies and medals to the winning and losing teams.
In his closing remarks, the chief guest said: “Chess is not merely a game; it is a unique means of developing the mind and far-sighted thinking. Inter-university sports competitions play a very important role in strengthening students’ co-curricular activities and mutual friendship.”
He congratulated and extended his best wishes to all participating teams, including champions Dhaka University and runners-up Jahangirnagar University.
Those involved expressed hope that the JU chess team’s success would inspire other players on campus and further enhance the university’s standing in national sports.
