Students who failed one or two subjects in the HSC examinations will sit retakes on December 2 and 3, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said. The results will be published on December 23.

The minister told reporters this on Thursday (November 5) morning after visiting Shamsul Hoque Khan School and College in the capital’s Matuail.

The average pass rate across 11 education boards in this year’s HSC and equivalent examinations was 52.12 percent, compared with 58.83 percent last year—a decline of 6.71 percentage points.

Of the 12 lakh 40 thousand 798 students who sat the examinations this year, 6 lakh 46 thousand 685 passed.

Female students recorded a higher pass rate, with 3 lakh 56 thousand 528 passing, or 56.31 percent. Among male students, 2 lakh 90 thousand 157 passed, a rate of 47.75 percent.

Male students, however, led in GPA-5 results. A total of 40,084 students achieved GPA-5 this year: 20,363 male students and 19,721 female students. Last year, 69,097 students achieved GPA-5, meaning the number fell by 29,013 this year.

No candidate passed from 293 educational institutions this year, compared with 202 last year. The number of institutions with zero passes therefore rose by 91.

The HSC and equivalent examinations began on July 2. Under the original schedule, written examinations were due to end by August 8 and practical examinations by August 15. However, natural disasters forced the Chattogram Education Board to postpone several written examinations. After the postponed examinations were held, the board completed its written examinations on September 9.
