Police have detained a man accused of killing his mother, Surja Banu, 55, by slitting her throat after she refused to give him money for drugs in Pabna’s Faridpur upazila.
The incident took place around 11am on Tuesday (20 October) in Lakshmikol village. Surja Banu was the wife of Lukman, a resident of the village. Her son Ahmed, 35, is accused of the killing.
According to local sources, Surja Banu was working in the kitchen that morning when Ahmed asked her for money for drugs. When she refused, he allegedly slit her throat with a sickle kept in the kitchen, killing her. He then took shelter in a nearby house. Police detained him around 12:30pm.
Locals alleged that Ahmed had beaten his mother several times before over money for drugs.
Faridpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjurul Hasan Masud said police had recovered the woman’s body and sent it to a hospital morgue. He said her son had been detained and the process of taking legal action against him was under way.
