A court has rejected a bail petition filed by Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case accusing him of abetting the suicide of his second wife, Moriyom Akter.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir issued the order on Sunday (1 November) afternoon after hearing both sides. Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar confirmed the decision.

Lawyers Mahbubur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman, among others, sought bail for Gazi Nazrul. The prosecution opposed the petition, which the court rejected after the hearing.

In the petition, the defence claimed that Gazi Nazrul had no involvement in the incident and had been implicated to harass him. It also said he was 75 and suffered from a serious heart condition. The defence told the court that he had a permanent address and would not abscond if granted bail.

The petition also noted that his first wife, Maksuda Islam, secured bail in the same case on 30 September.

According to the case details, police recovered Moriyom Akter’s hanging body from a flat in the NAM building opposite the parliament building on the evening of 20 September. Police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda, into custody that night.

Moriyom’s father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case alleging abetment of suicide, naming Gazi Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam and Moriyom’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, as accused.

The following day, acting on the investigating officer’s application, the court granted police four days to interrogate Gazi Nazrul in custody and one day to interrogate Maksuda. The investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch that night.

Obaidur Rahman, who was later arrested in the case, was sent to jail on 23 September. While Maksuda secured bail on 30 September, the court has now rejected Gazi Nazrul’s latest bail petition.
