Translated by Desk Report

Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) hosted the Rangpur regional preliminary round of the 16th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad 2027 to foster students’ interest in chemistry, develop their talent and creativity, and identify skilled chemists of the future.
The university’s chemistry department organised the round on Saturday (October 31). A total of 466 students from educational institutions across Rangpur region registered for the competition.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Enamul Haque attended the opening ceremony as chief guest. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Nowsher Waan, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Masudul Hasan Khan and Faculty of Science Dean Prof Dr Md Monimul Islam were invited as special guests. Prof Dr Balaram Roy of the university’s chemistry department is serving as convener of the regional round, with Dr Fatiha Farhana as member secretary.
According to the organisers, participants sat a one-hour, 100-mark multiple-choice examination. The top 10 participants were selected on merit and awarded medals, certificates and crests.
Olympiad convener Prof Dr Balaram Roy said, “If we can give these young chemists the opportunity to represent the country on the world stage, chemistry pursuits in our country will have a far-reaching impact. Events like this make it possible to identify true chemistry enthusiasts.”
The organisers also said Jagannath University’s chemistry department is coordinating the 16th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad with support from the Bangladesh Chemical Society. This year’s preliminary round took place simultaneously at 14 centres across the country. About 4,000 HSC and A-level students were expected to participate. The top 10 students from each centre will receive awards based on merit.
The top 200 students selected from across the country will have the opportunity to compete in the final round, scheduled for November 28 at Jagannath University’s chemistry department. The top four students selected on merit from that round will have the opportunity to represent Bangladesh at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Taipei, Taiwan, from July 19 to 28 next year.
The organisers believe such competitions will encourage students to look beyond textbooks and acquire practical and creative knowledge of chemistry. They also expect the event to play an important role in developing talented students capable of representing Bangladesh at national and international levels.
