The Kurigram district unit of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society held an introductory meeting for its newly elected executive committee and a general meeting. Committee leaders pledged to strengthen humanitarian work to support people affected by river erosion, floods and other natural disasters and improve living standards for marginalised communities in char areas.

The meeting took place on Sunday (25 October) morning at the district unit’s office premises in the Dada Mor area of Kurigram town.

District unit Chairman and Zilla Parishad Administrator Sohel Hossain Kaikobad chaired the meeting. The unit’s General Secretary Mostafizar Rahman addressed it as chief guest.

Speakers said Kurigram is a riverine, disaster-prone district where people frequently struggle with river erosion, floods and other natural disasters. They called for more effective initiatives, particularly to improve education, healthcare and transport links for char communities. They said the Red Crescent Society must work earnestly to deliver humanitarian aid swiftly to vulnerable and affected people during disasters.

The speakers also stressed the need to expand humanitarian services and ensure volunteers’ active participation, enabling the organisation to support vulnerable people in remote parts of the district, including hard-to-reach char areas.

The newly elected committee expressed its firm commitment to improving living standards for Kurigram’s people, strengthening disaster-response capacity and making humanitarian work more dynamic.

Others who spoke included the newly elected committee’s Vice-Chairman Shamsul Islam Mondal; members Professor Shafiqul Islam Bebu, Professor Hasibur Rahman Hasib, Jahurul Alam, Kafil Uddin, Hasan Zobayer Himel, Iqbal Hossain Chand, Reshma Sultana and Hedayet Hossain Elich; and Youth Red Crescent member Iqbal Rabbi.

Bayozid Hossain, an officer at the district unit office, moderated the event.

Red Crescent Society volunteers at various levels, local dignitaries and journalists attended the meeting.
