International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said he will write to the home ministry about selling the assets of 11 to 12 convicted defendants, including ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and giving half the proceeds to the families of those killed in the July–August movement.

At a briefing at the tribunal on Tuesday (3 November) afternoon, he said steps were being taken to send the letter that day.

The chief prosecutor said there were directives to confiscate the assets of convicted fugitives and give them to the victims’ families. The defendants concerned had not appealed against their verdicts within the stipulated 30 days, he said, adding that it was therefore being assumed they would not appeal.

Aminul Islam also said there were fears the fugitives could sell their assets. The letter would therefore also call for the assets to be taken into government custody.
