Jamaat suspends leader’s membership after private video with wife spreads online

The Mymensingh city unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has temporarily suspended the rukon, or sworn membership, of Md Shahidullah, 46, after a private video spread on social media. The decision came at an emergency meeting on Monday evening.
Shahidullah was a rukon of the party’s Natun Bazar thana unit in the city. He works as an office assistant at a local Dakhil madrasa.
Party sources said the video began circulating on Facebook and other platforms on Monday morning. The city unit called an emergency meeting after the matter sparked discussion.
City Jamaat Ameer Kamrul Ahsan confirmed the decision. He said Shahidullah had been asked for his account of the video and had maintained that it was private. The party, however, viewed the matter as a moral lapse and temporarily suspended his sworn membership.
Shahidullah, meanwhile, said the video captured an intimate, private moment with his wife. He alleged that an unidentified person had obtained it from his mobile phone and posted it on social media out of enmity.
He also alleged that he had earlier faced demands for a large sum of money under threat of the video’s release. Shahidullah said he was preparing to file a case to identify those involved and take legal action.
